WHO WE ARE

We are a 501(c)(3) collective of women of African descent dedicated to restoring and fostering wellness for women of color and their families through the arts and our internationally replicated SisterFriend model. We are an African/Black women’s perinatal health collective, part of the Birthing Project USA, founded in 1988, with over 110 birthing projects internationally and over 10,000 babies born to parents prepared to care for them.

OUR VISION

We strive to encourage a positive state of health for women and their families, regardless of material resources, belief system, ethnicity, nationality, or sexual identity during the perinatal period, the period surrounding pregnancy. We strive to meet the challenge of encouraging better birth outcomes with the creativity, commitment, humor, and love that has brought us this far.

OUR WORK

We pair a pregnant teen or woman, with a friend, an elder sister, who supports her during her pregnancy, and until her child’s first birthday. Men provide support to the babies’ fathers. Through our Healing Our Healers events, with an emphasis on African Arts and Education, we encourage family wellness through the arts to deepen self-awareness, connection to each other, and our surroundings.

What Our Moms Say

“You did more than anyone emotionally, physically and mentally.  You are the best doula and thank you for educating me before and after my pregnancy. I’ll recommend you anytime. I love to keep you for my next three pregnancies.”
